The real-life Lord Boothby (1900-1986) was an MP for East Aberdeenshire from 1928 to 1954, and after that was Baron of Buchan and Rattray Head; and also appeared in the Thames-produced documentary The World at War.

The name was a pun on radio DJ and Top of the Pops co-host Tony Blackburn, whom Mr. Hill previously impersonated in the "Top of the Tops" sketch of January 27, 1971.
